Romilly Kemp is nearly nine when she settles with her eccentric artist father in a dilapidated old farmhouse called Braër, surrounded by a moat. Her father begins creating illustrated children’s books with Romilly as the heroine. The books become wildly popular, and people arrive at their home convinced that hidden within the illustrations is a treasure map. But as the fame grows, Romilly’s father starts to withdraw. Romilly, lonely and worried, turns back to the illustrated books he made and begins uncovering clues he has left behind. The real treasure she finds isn’t gold—but a deep, dark secret that will change everything she thought she knew about her family.
